The installation of nine monitoring cameras resulted in a partnership between Caraguá Luz and NEC Latam to optimize PPP street lighting resources.  Since late April, the city of Caraguatatuba /SP is being exposed to a unique public safety-monitoring project. From a lighting grid operated by Caraguá Luz, nine high-resolution cameras are sending images in real time of places with large concentrations of people and vehicles in the county. Data are analyzed by analytical software and generate alarms in cases of abnormalities. The project was made possible through a partnership between the concessionaire and NEC Latam, a world reference in information technology.

The experience is the result of investments made by the first street lighting Public-Private-Partnership in the state of São Paulo. Established in 2015 by Grupo CONASA Infraestrutura, through Urbeluz Energética, the PPP gave origin to Concessionária Caraguá Luz. All investments provided by the PPP were concluded in the three first years of the contract with the modernization of 21.007 street lighting points with LED technology, installed in all city neighborhoods.

The main objective of the monitoring project is to offer management tools and public safety improvements through vehicles observation, facial recognition and the production of analytical data, optimizing the use of resources already made available by the lighting concession such as ornamental lampposts, electrical power grids and data and maintenance structure.

The intention is to expand the initiative to the whole city. “We are developing an executive project based on an analysis of the economic, financial and legal impacts. If approved by the County, definitive implementation in the city of Caraguatatba will occur in six months”, highlights Pedro Vicente Iacovino, Director of Caraguá Luz.
